What is EXIF and do I need it?

Almost every modern digital camera adds EXIF to your images. EXIF stores information on the image such as shutter speed, exposure compensation, F number, what metering system was used, if a flash was used, ISO number, date and time the image was taken, whitebalance, auxiliary lenses that were used and resolution.

Date & time the photo was taken

What's most important EXIF also stores the exact date and time your photo was taken. tookapic reads the EXIF from your photo and that way it knows if you haven't yet uploaded a photo for that day.

Besides that having all the details about your camera settings displayed under your photo is a great source of information for other users. tookapic was made for people who want to learn photography. Let them learn from you by not erasing EXIF from your photos.

What if my photo has no EXIF?

The only thing we require from your EXIF data is the date your photo was taken. If your photo has no EXIF (and therefore no info about the capture date), we'll just ask you to provide that info on the upload page.

If your photo has no EXIF and tookapic is unable to read the date it was taken, we'll just ask you to tell us when this photo was taken.
